Who does the CSRD apply to?
The CSRD mainly targets large companies and publicly listed firms across the European Union. Thanks to the Omnibus Directive, the number of businesses affected has been significantly reduced, with certain companies (waves 2 and 3) now benefiting from a two-year extension before the rules take effect.
It is therefore essential for eligible companies to anticipate their reporting obligations early in order to meet regulatory deadlines without disruption to their operations.
Why was the CSRD created?
The CSRD was designed to drive greater transparency on how companies impact the environment and society. It requires businesses to share clear information about their actions on climate, human rights, and pollution reduction. This gives investors, customers, and citizens a better understanding of each company’s commitment to sustainability.
By standardising sustainability disclosures across the EU, the CSRD also enables more meaningful comparisons between companies and strengthens trust in reported ESG data.
What exactly is the CSRD?
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is a European regulation that requires companies to publish a comprehensive sustainability report, covering environmental, social, and governance topics. It replaces the NFRD, which first introduced non-financial reporting obligations. Reports must be verified by an independent expert similar to an audit to ensure data is reliable and comparable across organizations. The 2025 Omnibus Directive will further streamline the CSRD by simplifying its scope and reporting requirements.
By standardising sustainability disclosures across the EU, the CSRD also enables more meaningful comparisons between companies and strengthens trust in reported ESG data.
